"Covering Global Climate Change"

Open to the Public

Dr. Paula Dobriansky, Belfer Center Senior Fellow, Former Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs

&

Andrew C. Revkin, Environment Reporter, The New York Times

About

In 2009, climate change is at the forefront of national and international policy, as the Obama Administration and U.S. Congress grapple with new initiatives to curb greenhouse gas emissions at a time of great economic uncertainty and the United Nations works to craft a new global treaty in time for the December Copenhagen summit. Media coverage plays a crucial role in public understanding of crucial environmental issues, from ordinary citizens to political leaders. Mr. Revkin will talk about the challenges involved in covering the science, policy, and politics of climate change for a global audience.

Mr. Revkin is an award-winning reporter on environmental issues at The New York Times and the founder of the popular blog Dot Earth (nytimes.com/dotearth), which takes a broad look at the global impact of humans on the planet. For nearly 25 years he has been traveling the world covering a broad range of environmental issues, from the tsunami in Asia to melting sea ice in the Arctic. Columbia University recently awarded him the 2008 John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism "for his decades-long coverage of the science and politics of climate change." Before joining The Times in 1995, Mr. Revkin was a senior editor of Discover, a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times, and a senior writer at Science Digest.  He is the author of books on the Amazon, global warming, and the North Pole.
