Spring 2016 Belfer Center Newsletter

| Spring 2016

The Spring 2016 issue of the Belfer Center newsletter features recent and upcoming Center activities, along with research and analysis of critical global issues by members of the Center community. This issue features the huge global impact of cheap oil, with comments by Leonardo Maugeri, Robert Stavins, Henry Lee, Meghan O’Sullivan, Calestous Juma, David Keith, and Khalid Alsweilem on its economic, environmental, and geo-political effects.

The Kennedy School was honored in December with a visit by Secretary of Defense Ashton B. Carter, former director of the Belfer Center and long-time HKS professor. Secretary Carter discussed a range of topics at a JFK Jr. Forum moderated by Center Director Graham Allison.

We also highlight the work of Center nuclear experts in relation to the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit, including the Project on Managing the Atom’s significant new report Nuclear Security: Continuous Improvement or Dangerous Decline. The Center’s increasing attention to cybersecurity is a focus as well, with articles announcing the appointment of Michael Sulmeyer, the new director of the Cyber Security Project, his take on cybersecurity challenges, and his plans to “create a conceptual arsenal of strategies to aid decision-makers as they confront future challenges of conflict in cyberspace.”

This issue also features “one of the most compelling stories of neighborhood restoration in U.S. urban history” with our article about the role of the Belfer Center and Harvard Kennedy School in the successful recovery of the Broadmoor neighborhood in post-Katrina New Orleans. With leadership from former Center senior fellow Doug Ahlers, the Broadmoor community-based recovery model has been successfully applied in other disaster sites around the world.

We also remember and celebrate Ambassador Stephen Bosworth. Bosworth, a senior fellow with the Center following his service in government and tenure as dean of Tufts’ Fletcher School of Government, died in January. Government officials, colleagues, students, and friends from around the world expressed condolences and deep respect for him as a kind and wise man and consummate diplomat.
